Fable 5 free credits: claiming them turns on usage billing on your account without warning

Fable 5 free credits: claiming them turns on usage billing on your account without warning

Anthropic gave you $100 (about R$ 540 in Brazilian reais) in free credits to use Fable 5, its most advanced model. The gift is real. There's no fine print on the amount, and no raffle.

The fine print is in the click. To claim the Fable 5 free credits you need to add a payment method, and claiming leaves "extra usage" (Anthropic's pay-as-you-go billing) enabled on your account. When the $100 runs out, the switch from their money to yours happens with no separate warning. Devs are finding this out on their invoice, and r/ClaudeAI has piled up enough reports for it to become a story.

In this post you'll see exactly what claiming activates, how to check whether your account already has billing turned on, and the step-by-step to turn it off, or to use the credit with a safety net, which is what I recommend.

TL;DR

  • What it is: a one-time $100 credit (~R$ 540) for Pro and Team Standard subscribers to use Fable 5, which was removed from those plans' included usage on 07/20.
  • The catch: claiming requires a card on file and leaves extra usage enabled. When the free credit hits zero, consumption moves to your own balance, with no separate warning at the switch.
  • Cost/Access: claim by 08/02; the credit expires on 09/17/2026. After that, Fable 5 runs at API pricing: $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output tokens.
  • Useful link: claude.ai/settings/usage, the screen where all of this gets turned on and off.

The context: why Anthropic is giving away Fable 5 free credits

Fable 5 is the first model in Anthropic's Mythos line, and it's more expensive to run than any previous Claude. Since launch, its availability inside subscriptions has been a soap opera: in, out, back with a quota. We told that story in detail when the model came back in July.

On 07/20 Anthropic made the final call, according to the Help Center announcement: Max and Team Premium subscribers got Fable 5 included in their subscription, up to 50% of weekly limits. Pro and Team Standard subscribers lost included access, and the model now runs on "usage credits," pay-as-you-go billing at API pricing.

The $100 credit is compensation for the change: a one-time gesture for the people left on the outside. The claim window runs from 07/20 to 08/02, and the credit expires on 09/17/2026, used or not. Exame and other Brazilian outlets covered that part: who's eligible, how much it's worth, until when. What nobody covered is what the claim button does to your account's billing settings. That's where this post comes in.

Model pricing changing month to month is exactly the kind of thing anyone building products with AI needs to follow closely, and it's what we break down every week, building live, at Clã Beer and Code, the largest AI engineering community in Brazil. It's not a recorded course: it's execution, with people holding you to a pace.

The catch: what claiming turns on in your account

The claim flow is too simple. You open Claude, a pop-up shows up (or a banner in Settings > Usage), you confirm, and that's it. If you don't have a payment method on file, it asks for your card right then. The claim itself costs nothing.

But confirming the claim means enabling extra usage on your account: the pay-as-you-go billing mode Anthropic uses when you go past your plan's limits. And the order in which credits get consumed, documented by Nerdzap, is this: first the free promotional credits; then any usage credits you have, including auto-reload top-ups if that's turned on.

The sentence that sums up the problem, from the same article: "You will not get a separate warning as it crosses from free money to your own."

In other words: the horror scenario isn't Anthropic robbing anyone. It's a dev who claimed the credit in July, used Fable 5 heavily for three weeks, forgot that extra usage was left enabled, and in September the consumption keeps going, now on their own balance, with automatic top-ups if auto-reload is active. The charge is legitimate. The problem is that nobody showed you where the switch ended up.

To be fair to the other side: if you never enable extra usage, there's no surprise charge. Fable 5 simply becomes unavailable on your plan, as the usage credits documentation confirms. The trap is that claiming the gift is precisely the act that enables it.

How to check whether billing is already turned on

It takes one minute. Do it now, even if you think you didn't claim anything:

  1. Go to claude.ai/settings/usage (in the mobile app, the path redirects to the website).
  2. Look for the Extra usage section. If it shows as enabled, pay-as-you-go billing is active on your account.
  3. Check the balance: how much promotional credit is left and whether there's a paid balance on top of it.
  4. Check auto-reload. If it's on, the account buys more credits on your card by itself every time the balance drops below the configured threshold. This is where the surprise invoice lives.

How to turn it off (or use the credit with a safety net)

You have two paths, and both are legitimate.

Path 1: turn everything off

If you don't want any possibility of usage billing: in Settings > Usage, disable extra usage. The official documentation confirms you can turn it off at any time. You go back to having only your plan's included usage, and Fable 5 becomes unavailable when the promotional credit runs out or expires.

Heads up: depending on how the promotion was implemented on your account, disabling extra usage may mean giving up whatever is left of the free credit. If you want to use the full $100, path 2 is better.

Path 2: use the gift with a lock on it

The $100 is real money, and you can run a lot of Fable 5 with it. If you want to use it without risk:

  1. In Settings > Usage, click Adjust limit and set a monthly spending cap. It can be $0 of your own money, if the idea is just to burn through the promotional credit.
  2. Turn off auto-reload. Without automatic top-ups, when the credit runs out usage simply stops. Nobody buys new credit on your card without you clicking.
  3. Write down 09/17/2026: whatever is left of the credit evaporates on that date. It doesn't become balance, and it doesn't become a discount.

With a cap set and auto-reload off, the worst case is Fable 5 stops responding. Without those locks, the worst case is the invoice.

Quick FAQ

I claimed the credit. Am I already being charged? Not yet. Consumption is deducted from the $100 promotional credit first. Charges to your own pocket only start when the free credit hits zero and you keep using it, or if auto-reload tops up by itself. Check your balance in Settings > Usage before the doubt turns into an invoice.

If I don't claim it, do I lose anything? You lose the $100, and Fable 5 becomes unavailable on the Pro/Team Standard plan. But there's no charge at all: without extra usage enabled, the model just disappears from the options. The other models (Opus, Sonnet, Haiku) keep working normally in the subscription.

I have Max or Team Premium. Does this affect me? The credit isn't for you. Your plan already includes Fable 5 up to 50% of weekly limits. But the same extra usage screen exists on your account, and the same audit applies: if it's enabled with auto-reload, going over your plan's limit turns into charges just the same.

How much does Fable 5 cost after the credit runs out? API pricing: $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output tokens, according to Startups.com.br. To calibrate: 1 million tokens in each direction comes to $60, three times the monthly Pro fee. We ran those numbers in detail in the post on the real price of Claude Code in 2026.

Don't turn down the gift. Read the contract.

Bottom line: the $100 is worth it, the catch is real, and the defense takes one minute: spending cap set, auto-reload off, expiration date on your calendar. The gift is good; what deserves the criticism is the UX pattern that turns on billing without highlighting it on the claim screen.

This move also says something bigger: frontier models have become a product with a taxi meter running, and the era of "use as much as you want on your subscription" is ending plan by plan. Anyone building with AI will need to treat token cost as an architecture requirement, not as an end-of-month surprise.

Living post: if Anthropic changes the claim flow, adds a warning when the credit switches over, or responds publicly to the reports, this post will be updated.
